As a composer, Gabunia’s preferred genres were chamber and orchestral music. He is the author of three symphonies, three piano concertos, a violin concerto, two string quartets, three piano sonatas, a piano trio, two song cycles and many other compositions.

In 1964, he wrote a vocal chamber piece called the Fable, which was awarded the Grand Prix at the 1973 UNESCO International Music Competition. It has since been widely recognised as a masterpiece of contemporary Georgian music.

In recent years Gabunia’s works have started to be performed increasingly often in concert halls around the world.
